Over two hundred people, some dressed in Casablanca, 1930’s attire, attended the lively open house at the Lighthouse Cinema on Friday night September 19th. The party came complete with all manner of good food, good wine, even beer and soft drinks. There was a lively mariachi band which was fun even though a bit at odds with the Casablanca theme of the party. The movie was shown at the end of the event. It was obvious that folks at the party had a good time.
The new owner of the Lighthouse Cinema Dr. Ayem Adeeb, a local dentist whose practice is here in town, bought the complex and he has big plans for it.
“I love Pacific Grove, Dr. Adeeb said, I want this to be not only a great place to see a movie but also a community center as well"
Dr. Adeeb has spent well over two million dollars refurbishing the property including beautiful marble flooring and upscale wall coverings and a new paint job on the exterior to name but a few of the improvements he has made.
Dr. Adeeb said that he plans to have one of the three theaters used as a live performance venue. He was most interested in the idea of having one of the other theaters be converted to an “indy,”(independent) and foreign film venue, similar to the now defunct Osio Theater in Monterey. It will be complete with a salon area where coffee and other refreshments would be served so that movie goers would have a place to chat about the films they saw. He also has ideas about having special events for children on Saturday mornings, including movies of course, but also birthday parties and other family celebrations in one of the theaters.
The third theater in the complex is already decked out to fulfill Dr. Adeeb’s dinner-and- a -movie concept. There is a restaurant set up in front of the area where there is a movie screen. Dr. Adeeb said he has already hired a very good chef for the dinner service. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner service.
The refurbished and revitalized Lighthouse Cinema is another addition to what is certainly a lively vibe that has come to town in recent years. It is dynamic, younger. We no longer roll up the streets of the town at 7:00.p.m. The Chamber of Commerce ‘s very popular first Friday events has really helped to promote some sort of night life in Pacific Grove. We now have several venues downtown which not only serve food and alcohol but have live entertainment as well. As it stands now
, there is a 10:00 p.m. curfew for these establishments.
A prominent City official, who didn’t want to be quoted, predicted that it won’t be long until the ten o’clock limit for serving alcohol and playing music is lifted. After all, most young people don’t even leave their crib until after 9.
